Acupuncture for Insomnia
For the "incurable" insomniac, there seems to be no rest for the weary. But, rarely is such a case incurable. Many have found short-term relief from temporary sleeplessness with over-the-counter medications. However, drugs can leave many people with next-day "hangovers" or lingering drowsiness. It defeats the purpose of deep slumber.
TCM Health Centers' clients of acupuncture in St. Paul have achieved better sleep by utilizing the natural healing powers of acupuncture for insomnia. Whatever method you choose to get sleep, or more restorative slumber, your approach will likely yield better results when coupled with a focus on improving "sleep hygiene" as well. These practices alone may improve an insomniac's sleep:
- Address other health issues that may be disrupting sleep: apnea, indigestion/heartburn, migraines, etc.
- Cut back on caffeinated beverages/food - coffee, tea, cola, chocolate - or at least stop ingesting them after noon or so.
- Create a quite sleeping environment. Keep the bedroom cool and dark, and restrict activities there to sleep and sex only.
- Avoid daytime napping, especially within a few hours of bedtime. Naps can cause us to be too alert later, when we really need to sleep.
- Get exercise. Gentle physical activity during the day can encourage sleep; however, don't do it late if it makes you too alert.
- Get up/go to bed at regular times to regulate the sleep/wake cycle. Take up a relaxing ritual that will set the tone for sleep.
- If sleep doesn't occur within 20 minutes, get up and resume a relaxing activity in another room until you're sleepy again.
For many insomniacs, improving sleep hygiene may not offer adequate relief; there may be other undiagnosed or unaddressed issues that interfere with rest. In these cases, an individual may find that combining good habits with natural therapies such as acupuncture in Minnesota based TCM Health Centers is enough to solve the issue. Remember, though, to consult with your prescribing physician before starting/stopping any medical treatment.
